In previous episode, Hung's dish is deemed closest to the original, while Sara is unable to complete the task -- the first of many problems. The chefs then head to Lee Anne's second home, The French Culinary Institute.
Padma tells them that they will have to make a dish using chicken, potatoes, and onions for the culinary legends and professors of the FCI. Hung's chicken skin chip finally gets him a win and a trip to the finale in Aspen, as do Casey's, Dale's, and Brian's dishes. All Sara's poorly-executed Jamaican-inspired dish gets her is a one-way trip home.
The chefs had to create the first course for the Meals on Wheels Chicago Celebrity Chef Ball, which was being catered by the city's best known chefs. The competitors were asked to set the tone for the night's meal by preparing the first course. They were asked to work with themes of earth, water, fire and air, depending on which knife they drew. With 15 minutes to plan their menus, the chefs got to it quickly.
The remaining five chefs finally land in New York City. After taking in the sights and some street meat, they're off to their Quickfire at the famous Le Cirque, where they are greeted by renowned owner Sirio Maccioni. The chefs are treated to a special halibut dish, which they then have to re-create.
The judges wanted to see Teams Earth and Water, their least favorites. Richard of Team Water was put on the defensive quickly, having to answer to why there were so many scales left on the fish. Mark had to defend why there were parsnips on the plate. For Team Earth, the judges thought every part of the dish was under-seasoned. Spike mentioned his butternut squash soup idea, which prompted Antonia to reiterate how adamantly against the idea she was. Spike was angry with himself for not fighting for the soup.
